Make it work or make it new?
Deciding between a quick refresh or a long-term solution for kitchen cabinets
When kitchen cabinets start looking worn or dated, the question becomes, should you refresh what you have, or is it time to start over? The answer depends on more than just budget. It comes down to how your kitchen functions, what your cabinets are made of, and how long you want the results to last.

Why back acne happens (and what helps)
Back acne doesn’t get the same daily attention as facial breakouts, but it’s just as common in teens — and often related to how the skin is functioning rather than how well it’s being cleaned.

Kids and pets grow together
My 3-year-old has taken to feeding our dog dinner with the duty and honor of the Swiss Guard, albeit with the consistency of, well, a 3-year-old. Some kibble ends up on the floor rather than in the bowl, but the dog takes care of most of it. As a parent it’s both funny and rewarding to watch, as it helps my child learn while strengthening the bond they have with our family pet.

Investing in your child’s early learning
When parents ask about the value of early childhood education, and whether it makes sense to invest at this stage rather than waiting until high school, I emphasize the power of beginnings, supported not only by experience but by research from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP maintains that the early years are a period of rapid brain maturation which forms the foundation for all future cognitive, social and emotional development.

Expanding your child’s palate
In the orthodontic world, expanding a palate isn’t about trying bold new foods, it’s about literally widening the space commonly called the roof of the mouth, i.e., the palate. A narrow arch in the palate can make for crowded teeth, misaligned bite and other dental issues.

Trying something new
Among the many reasons why summer day camps are great for kids: the chance to try something new in a safe, supported environment. Some children jump right in at the chance to try a new activity, and some are more cautious. Our staff is trained to support them in whatever a child’s approach may be.

A gentler way to clean
Spring cleaning shouldn’t make a mess of the planet. Caboo, makers of tree-free paper products understand that. Made entirely with bamboo, one of the fastest growing and least needy varieties of grass on Earth, you can wipe out messes without wiping out forests or turning to synthetics. Caboo products are available at First Alternative Co-op.

Four sneaky acne triggers
If you’ve ever stood in the bathroom with your teen wondering, “We’re washing, we’re trying…so why is this still happening?” know you’re not alone. Acne is multi-faceted and stubborn. While hormones play a role, I often see everyday habits acting as hidden triggers.

Spring is here and so are the itchies
As the flowers bloom and we prepare for the inevitable sneezing season, it’s important to remember that our four-legged family members are often right there with us. In dogs and cats, spring allergies look less like a runny nose and more like an endless, frustrating itch.

Learning loss: avoid the summer slide
Summer learning loss, aka, the “summer slide,” is when students start the school year with academic achievement and testing levels lower than what they had at the end of the last school year. Over the summer months, students’ academic levels decline — especially in math and reading — resulting in the loss of one month of school year learning. And this slide gets steeper in higher grade levels.

Permission to fail
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is permission to fail. Failure is not the opposite of success; it is a necessary step towards succeeding. If necessity is the mother of invention, then feeling safe enough to fail is the father of invention.
