The nature of home

Creating everyday connections to the outdoors

Bringing the outdoors in isn’t only about plants, colors or materials. It’s also about creating a home that reminds us we are part of the natural world rather than separate from it. The most restorative interiors don’t imitate nature — they help us reconnect with it.

Seasonal awareness

Create opportunities to notice and celebrate the changing seasons. Place a reading chair where morning sunlight streams in during the winter months. Fill a vase with flowering branches in spring or colorful foliage in autumn. Rotate soft furnishings such as pillows and throws to reflect the season, such as a chunky knit blanket in winter or bright linen textiles in spring.

Mimic nature’s movement

Nature is rarely still: trees sway, water ripples and sunlight shifts throughout the day. Hang billowing drapery on operable windows and allow the breeze to gently move the fabric. Just as important, create a clear path to your windows. Furniture can either invite or block our connection to the outdoors. If a sofa, chair or table is pressed against a window, consider pulling it away slightly or allowing it to float within the room. Creating visual and physical access to the window encourages your eye — and your mind — to travel beyond the walls of your home and into the landscape beyond. Consider installing a fountain outside a favorite window or adding a small tabletop fountain indoors. The subtle movement

and sound can create an immediate sense of calm.

Embrace natural rhythms of light

Nature doesn’t move from bright daylight to darkness with the flip of a switch — it transitions gradually. Use layered lighting and dimmers to mimic this progression. As daylight fades, reduce overall brightness and rely more on lamps than overhead lighting. Today’s wireless technology makes it easier than ever to create lighting that adjusts automatically throughout the year, helping your home move in harmony with nature.

Create everyday rituals

Bringing the outdoors in is about how we interact with the natural world every day. Take a moment to delight your senses. Keep a bowl of citrus on the counter. Bring home fresh flowers from the market. Grow herbs on a sunny kitchen windowsill and brush your fingers across them while pre-

paring dinner. Find simple ways that fit naturally into your life and invite moments of connection throughout the day.
