The best and worst holiday candy for kids’ teeth

From trick-or-treating to candy canes, the holiday season is packed with sugary temptations. While these treats are a fun part of celebrating, aim for tooth-friendlier treats like these:


Peanut butter cups (like Reese’s): Soft and non-sticky, these treats tend to have less sugar than chewy candies. Opt for dark chocolate if available.


Plain chocolate or dark chocolate squares: These melt in the mouth and rinse away easily, reducing the chance for sugar to linger on teeth.


Sugar-free candy: Look for options sweetened with xylitol or erythritol. These sugar substitutes don’t feed cavity-causing bacteria and may even help reduce plaque.


Sugar-free gum (especially with xylitol): Chewing gum after meals or sweets boosts saliva flow, which helps wash away sugar and neutralize acids in the mouth.


The worst offenders are sticky candies like caramel, gummies and taffy, which linger on teeth.


Have your child rinse with water after eating candy and brush their teeth 30 minutes later to protect their smile. Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
