Pessaries for prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) affects millions of individuals, often resulting in discomfort, pressure and disruptions to daily life. One effective, non-surgical option for managing POP symptoms is to use a pessary, which is a small, medical-grade silicone device inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs.

Pessaries come in various shapes and sizes and are fitted by a trained health care provider, often a pelvic floor physical therapist, gynecologist or urogynecologist. When properly fitted, a pessary can reduce the feeling of heaviness or bulging, decrease leakage and allow for more comfortable movement. Some people use them daily, while others wear them only during specific activities like running or lifting.

What makes pessaries so appealing is their flexibility. Pessaries offer immediate relief and can be removed or adjusted as needed. They’re especially helpful for individuals who wish to delay surgery, are not surgical candidates, or they are postpartum and experiencing temporary symptoms. To enhance outcomes, it is ideal to incorporate pelvic floor physical therapy alongside pessary use.

Pessaries empower individuals with prolapse to return to the activities they love without fear. If you’re experiencing symptoms of prolapse, reach out to Duality Pelvic Health and Wellness to start the pessary fitting process.
