5 simple ways to protect your child’s smile

A few consistent routines can make a big difference in preventing cavities and keeping kids’ teeth healthy as they grow.

1. Brush twice a day: Children should brush for two minutes twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Parents need to help children brush until around age 10, when kids gain better dexterity.

2. Limit sugary drinks and snacks: Frequent sugary snacks and drinks increase the risk of cavities. Water is always the best option between meals, especially after snacks or sports activities.

3. Keep up with regular dental visits: Your child should visit the dentist every 6 months. Routine dental visits help catch small problems early and keep children comfortable with dental care as they grow.

4. Protect teeth during sports: If your child plays sports, a mouthguard can help prevent chipped or knocked-out teeth. Accidents can happen quickly, even in non-contact activities.

5. Don’t wait to address dental problems: Small dental issues can become bigger problems if they’re ignored. Tooth pain, sensitivity, swollen gums or white spots on teeth are all signs parents shouldn’t overlook. Early treatment is often more comfortable for children and less costly for families.
