Lane County Waste Management: Strong value at low cost

Did you know that Lane County Waste Management services are not supported by taxes? Instead, they are supported by tipping fees — the cost paid by residents and garbage haulers for disposal. These fees keep the system running, covering everything from daily operations to essential public services.

And because Lane County’s tipping fee remains among the lowest in Oregon, residents benefit from a system that delivers strong value while keeping costs down.

But what many people may not realize is that these fees fund far more than just landfill operations. Approximately half of the tipping fee supports the system benefit fee (SBF), an investment that ensures residents receive critical services that protect both public health and the environment. Through the SBF, Lane County provides:

  • Household hazardous waste disposal, giving residents a safe way to manage chemicals, paints and other dangerous materials.

  • A network of 15 transfer stations, keeping disposal convenient and accessible across the county.

  • Recycling education and programs, helping residents reduce waste and make informed choices.

Together, these programs create a waste management system that protects community health and strengthens Lane County’s commitment to sustainability.
