How staying hydrated helps bladder leakage

In warm weather, your body typically needs more water. But for many who have leakage issues, drinking more water sounds like the last thing you want to do. Though it may seem counterintuitive, making sure you are well hydrated actually supports your pelvic floor health, in the summer and all year round.
Dehydration can lead to:
Constipation, which increases the strain on the pelvic floor, thereby increasing the risk of leakage and pain
A higher concentration of urine, which irritates the bladder and then increases leakage and UTI risk
Reduced tissue quality and support, which then ups the risk of leakage and prolapse
This means hydration is your pelvic floor’s friend, not enemy! It is recommended to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day, then increase your needs depending on activity level and sweat.
If drinking plain water sounds terrible, you can flavor your water with fruit or drink mixes that don’t have caffeine. If you have a medical diagnosis that affects your water intake, please speak with your medical provider before changing your water intake.
