Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in both dogs and cats, and can cause discomfort and more serious health issues if left untreated.
For both cats and dogs, signs of a UTI can include frequent urination, accidents outside the litter box or on the floor, blood in the urine or difficulty urinating. Your pet may also seem to be in pain while urinating or may excessively lick the genital area. If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to consult your vet as soon as possible.
Older pets, pets with diabetes, or those with a history of bladder stones or kidney disease are more susceptible to UTIs. Cats are also prone to a urinary issue called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC) which is a non-bacterial condition, often linked to stress, that causes bladder inflammation.
Treatment for a UTI typically involves antibiotics, where FIC management focuses on stress reduction, hydration and pain medications which are prescribed by your vet. Ensuring your pet is properly hydrated and maintaining good bathroom habits is key to recovery. For cats, providing a high-quality diet that promotes urinary health and reducing stress factors can help prevent future infections.
By recognizing the symptoms early and seeking prompt veterinary care, you can help your furry companion recover quickly and prevent recurring urinary tract infections.
