Plan ahead to ensure both you and your furry friend stay safe and comfortable, whether you’re heading on a road trip or flying across the country.

Veterinary checkup: Before your trip, schedule a visit to the vet. Make sure your pet is healthy enough for travel, and discuss special needs or precautions, especially if you’re flying. Some airlines require pets to be up-to-date on vaccinations or have a health certificate. Carry a copy of your pet's vaccine records while traveling.

Pet identification: Ensure your pet has proper identification, including a collar with a tag displaying your contact information. Microchipping your pet is also highly recommended, as it offers an extra layer of security if they get lost during your travels.

Pack pet essentials: Pack a bag for your pet that includes their food, water, medications, grooming tools and familiar items like their favorite toy or blanket. Having these comforts will help ease anxiety.

Pet-friendly accommodations: Many hotels, Airbnb properties and camp-

sites are now pet-friendly, but confirm their policies regarding pet sizes, breeds and any extra fees.

Safety during transit: In cars, secure your pet in a crate or harness to prevent distractions and protect them during sudden stops. When flying, make sure your pet’s carrier meets the airline’s regulations for comfort and safety.
