Protruding teeth are an injury risk

If your child is active — and most of them are — protecting their smile goes beyond wearing a mouthguard during sports. One often-overlooked risk? Front teeth that stick out too far.
Protruding teeth (sometimes called “buck teeth”) aren’t just a cosmetic concern. Studies show they are up to three times more likely to be damaged or knocked out during falls, sports or even everyday accidents. We see it all the time — kids hitting handlebars, diving for a soccer ball, or colliding on the playground — the dental trauma is painful and upsetting for kids and parents.
The good news is that early orthodontic treatment can reduce the risk of injury. That’s why the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first checkup by age 7.
At Chvatal Orthodontics, we offer free consultations with 3D X-rays to evaluate your child’s bite, growth and injury risk. Not every child needs early treatment, but if those front teeth are sticking out, a small step now could prevent painful damage later.
