Panoramic dental X-rays

A panoramic X-ray, also known as a Panorex, is a two-dimensional dental X-ray that captures the entire mouth in a single image. It provides a broad view of teeth, jaws and surrounding structures, allowing dentists to assess the overall dental health and diagnose potential issues.

As dentists, we recommend a panoramic X-ray every three to five years for a variety of health reasons, including monitoring growth and development, confirming that all adult teeth are present and developing properly in the bone, and assessing the need for orthodontic intervention to ensure proper bite and teeth alignment.

Another rare but important reason for obtaining this type of X-ray is to screen for head and neck cancers. Several years ago in my office, a panoramic X-ray revealed malignant cancer in a young patient. Because the cancer was discovered early, this patient was able to receive surgery and radiation, and they are now in remission. I firmly believe the panoramic X-ray saved this child’s life.

We understand that parents have concerns about radiation exposure from X-rays. As both a pediatric dentist and a mom, I get it: we’re always looking at the benefits versus the risk of any health recommendation for our kids. You can trust that a panoramic X-ray is a safe tool to keep your kids healthy and smiling.
