Nitrous oxide use in kids’ dentistry

When it comes to dental care, many children in pediatric dentistry benefit from the use of nitrous oxide gas.
Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide provides comfort from pain so that certain dental treatments can be completed. It allows patients to remain awake, responsive and in control of their natural reflexes.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide as safe. With children, nitrous oxide is breathed in through a small nose mask. It causes relaxation, eases the gag reflex and causes slight euphoria. It is non-addictive and clears quickly from the body.
In pediatric dentistry, we sometimes use nitrous oxide alongside local anesthetics for maximum comfort. Studies have shown that the use of nitrous oxide in combination with a distraction method such as TVs is more effective and far safer than more potent sedative drugs.
Our goal is to create happy, healthy dental patients. Nitrous oxide is one of many tools we use to provide a positive experience to young children that is non-traumatizing, pain-free and successful.
