Material recovery: a smart choice for home projects

Home remodeling projects often create more waste than people expect. Cabinets, doors, countertops, flooring and fixtures are frequently thrown away. BRING’s Materials Recovery Program offers a smarter option by working directly with contractors to recover reusable materials during home renovation projects.

The program supports contractors by helping identify salvageable materials and coordinating recovery. This matters because landfills are a limited resource, and producing new building materials comes with hidden costs. Manufacturing requires raw materials, energy, chemicals and long-distance transportation, all of which increase pollution and drive up prices. Reusing materials that already exist reduces these impacts while extending the life of materials that are still in good condition.

For homeowners, participation is simple and can help reduce disposal costs. Homeowners can ask their contractor to direct reusable materials to BRING as part of the project, or they can schedule a pickup themselves to avoid paying for landfill disposal and hauling. Commonly recovered items include doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, flooring, siding and more, making it easy to divert materials from the waste stream while saving money during remodeling or renovation projects. Material recovery shows that saving money and reducing waste can go hand in hand on your next home project. Learn more and connect with the program at bringrecycling.org/materialsrecovery.
