Help take the “ouch” out of shots

Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to protect children against serious illnesses. However, they are often the part of a doctor visit that kids, and consequently parents, dread the most. Here are some tips to help smooth the process.

Prepare. Discuss with your child why getting vaccines is important. Explain what is going to happen and encourage your child to ask questions. Avoid implying that getting vaccinated is negotiable. Practice having toys bravely get their shots.

Be validating. Acknowledge fears your child may have and avoid untruths like “you won't even feel it.” Similarly, saying things such as “don’t be a cry baby,” may cause shame and additional distress. Instead, shift the focus to strengths. Try saying, “It may be briefly uncomfortable, but you are strong and have the skills to handle this.”

Offer distractions. This may be a favorite song or video. For older kids, try a mental challenge such having them list as many animals as possible before the injection is complete. Tactile distractions, such as taps to the opposite limb or a device that vibrates the skin, can also help.

Praise and reward. Afterwards, give lots of praise, regardless of how it went. A small reward or treat can help improve the memory of the experience. Reflect on what went well and reinforce strengths. Anxieties often improve as kids get older, so the next time should go even more smoothly.
