Getting kids out the door in the morning or to bed at night can feel like a daily battle. If you’re tired of reminding, rushing and repeating yourself, a routine chart can help.

A routine chart breaks a task into a few simple steps so kids know exactly what to do. With practice, they become more confident and independent, which lowers stress for everyone. Pick one routine your child struggles with and list no more than five steps. Choose daily point values, based on how important each is to your family, with the total sum of 10. An example:

Kids earn stars or stickers as they complete each step. We recommend they earn a small reward when they complete at least 7 of 10 daily points, like extra playtime, choosing music or screen time. Aim for progress, not perfection and adjust steps if needed.

Over time, routines build independence and a sense of confidence that carries over into other areas of their lives.
