Just like humans, pets can have allergic reactions to insect bites, foods, medications, vaccines or environmental allergens. While some reactions are mild, others can be life-threatening and require immediate veterinary attention. Here is what to watch for in terms of a mild, moderate or severe reaction:
Mild to moderate allergic reaction:
Facial swelling (puffy eyes, lips or muzzle)
Hives or red, itchy skin
Excessive scratching or licking
Sneezing or watery eyes
Mild swelling at a vaccine or insect bite site
Severe (anaphylactic) reaction – Call an emergency vet ASAP!
Difficulty breathing (wheezing, gasping, blue gums)
Sudden vomiting or diarrhea
Weakness, collapse or fainting
Seizures or extreme disorientation
Swollen throat or inability to swallow
For mild to moderate symptoms, contact your veterinarian for guidance. For severe symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care immediately! Anaphylaxis can be fatal if not treated quickly.
