Understanding teen acne — what it is and isn’t

If your teen is dealing with acne, they’re not alone. Acne is one of the most common skin concerns in adolescence.

Quick fact: Acne is not caused by dirty skin. Over-washing or using harsh products can actually make things worse by damaging the skin’s barrier. Acne is more about what’s happening inside the skin than outside.

During the teen years, hormonal shifts increase oil production and disrupt how skin sheds. This leads to clogged pores. Once a pore is blocked, inflammation kicks in, causing red, swollen, often painful breakouts. Inflammation is a major driver of acne. It makes breakouts last longer and can leave behind stubborn marks. Without proper care, it becomes a frustrating cycle.

If you’ve experienced acne, your teen may have inherited a similar skin type. Genetics influence oil production, how easily pores clog, and how the skin reacts.

As a licensed esthetician and acne expert, I help teens understand their skin, choose the right products, and build simple routines that actually work — no guessing!

To parents: keep the conversation positive. Acne is common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. With the right support and consistent care, clearer skin — and more confidence — is absolutely possible.
