Tik Tok NO to DIY orthodontics

It has us singing the “Oh no” song.

If you have a teen or tween in your house, they are likely on the popular app Tik Tok. This fun platform with its catchy songs can be entertaining, but also dangerous: some of the many “challenges” can be harmful. One of the craziest ones going around? Using nail files to shape one’s teeth.

Using any kind of tool on your own to “reshape” your teeth is a bad idea. Once a tooth is filed down, it’s wide open to a host of problems including sensitivity, decay and even death of the tooth. Tooth enamel does not grow back; once it’s gone, it’s gone.

There are times where we, as board-certified orthodontists, will file teeth. We do this with proper tools and training, and only for the smallest fractional amounts to help with teeth alignment or overcrowding. When it comes to getting a great smile, tell your kids to leave it to the pros to help.
