Tech guidelines at school

Parents today face a shifting landscape when it comes to technology in schools, so being aware of a school’s policies on technology use is essential. Students benefit when schools are transparent about these policies and when there is a strong school-home partnership to support healthy technology use in and outside the classroom.

In the case of AI, many schools are still developing policies and catching up to the pace of change. This makes it especially important for parents to reach out to school leaders, understand the guardrails in place, and learn how students are being taught to use these tools responsibly, rather than being “left to their own devices.” Think about the adoption of calculators in the 1970s and imagine if every student in America received one yesterday: wouldn’t that have changed educational policy and the way mathematics was taught and learned?

True learning happens when students push through struggle, develop grit and build relationships with teachers and peers. AI, while powerful, can undermine these critical “learning moments” if used without guidance. Parents and schools together must ensure that technology supports, not replaces, the deeper goals of education. For a balanced and reasonable approach to this topic, visit the website of Trevor Muir, an educational thinker and researcher who offers great advice on AI use in schools.
