Pet safety in late summer

As an emergency veterinarian hospital, we see all kinds of seasonal injuries and illnesses. Keep your pet healthy and safe with these reminders:

Walks: Hot pavement can quickly burn sensitive paw pads. Before heading out for a walk, place the back of your hand on the sidewalk for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet. Early morning and evening walks are often the safest choice.

Water: Always bring fresh water on outings and provide plenty of shade during outdoor adventures. If you notice symptoms of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, bright red gums or collapse, move your pet to a cool area. Offer small amounts of water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

seek veterinary care immediately. Cars: Western Oregon temperatures can fool people into thinking a parked car can’t be that hot. Even into October we get heat that, in a parked car, can be deadly. Never leave your pet in a parked car — not even for a few minutes.

Get-togethers: Picnics and cookouts are filled with temptation for dogs: corn cobs, fruit pits, skewers and fatty table scraps can all lead to serious digestive problems. Keep foods safely out of reach from curious noses.

Enjoy your late summer safely before the rains come. We’re open 24/7 in case you need us.
