Neurodivergence & orthodontic visits

Visiting the orthodontist can feel overwhelming for neurodivergent children, but with the right accommodations, it can be a positive and successful experience. If your child has sensory sensitivities, anxiety or other specific needs, ask for these when scheduling an appointment:

  • Quieter appointment times. Early morning or slower parts of the day can reduce noise and crowding.

  • Private spaces. Some offices offer private exam rooms to minimize distractions and create a calming environment.

  • Dimmable lighting. Bright lights can be overstimulating; ask if lighting can be adjusted during the visit.

  • Pre-visit tours. A walk-through before the first appointment can help familiarize your child with the environment.

  • Extra time for appointments. Allowing for a slower pace can ease transitions between parts of the visit.

  • Personalized care plans. Sharing specific sensory preferences or triggers with the team can lead to better support.

At Chvatal Orthodontics, we offer all of these accommodations and more. Our goal is to create an experience where every child feels safe, understood and confident in their care.
