Healthy habits for back-to-school time

The shift back to “school mode” can feel like an abrupt end to summer. With a little planning, though, families can make the transition easier on everybody and foster a healthier, less stressful start to the school year.
Better sleep routines
The transition starts with inching toward healthier habits, and that includes better sleep hygiene. Summer break often means later nights and slower mornings, which make those early school wake-ups a particular challenge if your kid goes right into school mode. Establishing a regular bedtime routine with reading, dim lighting and consistent timing can help children reset more comfortably. Begin gradually adjusting bedtimes and wake times in 15- or 20-minute increments in the weeks before school begins.
Reining in screen time
While flexibility with screens is part of summer fun, the school year demands more structure and focus. Adjusting your kid’s screen time, especially just before bed when blue light from devices can interfere with natural sleeping rhythms, can pave the way to a smoother adjustment to school. Setting clear expectations around device use, particularly on school nights, can help children transition back to a more productive routine.
The power of reading
As school approaches, it’s also helpful to spark learning ahead of the first bell. This doesn’t mean hours of homework during summer break. But setting aside time each day for reading (or other quiet study time), even if it’s for just 20 or 30 minutes, can kickstart the focus necessary once school begins.
Getting to school safely
Whether your child walks, bikes or rides in a car, the last few weeks of summer make for a good time to reinforce some safety basics. Make sure bike helmets fit properly and that children understand the rules of the road. If you have young children, go over walking routes together and identify safe crossings. Also, it’s good to familiarize yourself with your school’s drop-off and pick-up procedures carefully.
Transitions are always easier when they’re done gradually. Small adjustments in the days and weeks leading up to the first day of school help create a smoother, healthier start to the school year.
