Litter box care is an essential part of maintaining your cat’s health and well-being, particularly when it comes to preventing and managing conditions like Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC).
FIC is a painful and common urinary tract condition in cats, where inflammation of the bladder occurs without a known cause. Proper litter box hygiene plays a significant role in preventing urinary issues in cats and managing FIC symptoms.
To prevent FIC, it’s crucial to keep the litter box clean. Cats are fastidious creatures and will often avoid using a dirty box, which can lead to stress or even contribute to urinary problems. Scoop the litter box at least once a day to remove waste and completely change the litter regularly.
Ideally, you should have one litter box per cat, plus one extra, to ensure they have enough space. The type of litter you use can also impact your cat’s health. Unscented, clumping litter is often preferred by cats and helps make cleaning easier.
If you have provided a fresh litter box environment, but are still noticing urinary issues, talk with your veterinarian. And if your cat has an urgent health concern, we’re open 24/7 to help.
