Setting goals for the new school year

The beginning of a new school year is an opportunity for a fresh start.

No matter what grade your child is in, a fresh school year is a time filled with possibilities. Setting goals can help kids stay motivated, develop good habits and measure their progress as they grow and develop.

Elementary school

Younger children benefit from simple, clear goals and lots of encouragement. At this age, it’s important to focus on building confidence and establishing routines. Goals should be small, few and measurable, to set the stage for future success. If necessary, break big goals into smaller steps, and celebrate progress along the way.

  • Set measurable goals like reading a certain number of books, as well as larger goals such as improving math skills or penmanship.

  • Consider behavioral goals such as remembering to raise their hand before speaking, sharing with classmates and being kind to others.

  • Build independence through learning skills like tying shoelaces, organizing their backpack or helping pack school snacks.

Middle school

Middle school students are ready for more complex goals as they develop a greater sense of independence and responsibility. They can be more involved in helping to identify areas to improve.

  • Set targets for grades, take on a challenging subject or participate in a science fair.

  • Join a club or sport to improve working in a group.

  • Keep a planner, complete assignments on time and balance homework with extracurricular activities to prepare middle-schoolers for high school and beyond.

High school

High school students face greater challenges, and their goals often relate to future aspirations as well as current academics. Students this age should practice setting both short-term and long-term goals.

  • Encourage them to use tools like calendars and checklists to keep track of their goals.

  • Set goals for daily studying time or lay out a plan for a college entrance exam.

  • Research colleges or explore career interests through job shadowing.

Setting goals at the start of the school year empowers students of all ages to take charge of their learning and growth. By tailoring goal-setting strategies to each developmental stage, parents and educators can help students build important skills and enjoy a successful school year — and celebrate achievements along the way.
