Holiday dangers for pets

The most wonderful time of the year brings unique hazards for our furry family members. As you deck the halls, be mindful of common holiday dangers for dogs and cats.

Festive plants like lilies (highly toxic to cats), mistletoe and holly can cause severe illness if ingested. Poinsettias, while mildly toxic, can still cause stomach upset. Choose safer alternatives, such as silk arrangements.

Tinsel and ribbon look like fun toys but pose a serious “linear foreign body” hazard. If swallowed, these decorations can cause severe, life-threatening damage to your pet’s intestines, often requiring emergency surgery. Keep shiny, stringy items out of reach.

Human treats are also off-limits. Chocolate, xylitol (a common sweetener), grapes and raisins are toxic, and fatty foods like gravy or turkey skin can cause pancreatitis. Stick to pet-safe snacks.

Secure your Christmas tree: anchor it firmly so it can’t tip over, and cover the water reservoir. Stagnant tree water can harbor bacteria and fertilizer that will make pets sick if they drink it.

A little vigilance ensures a happy, healthy holiday season for every member of your family — two-legged and four.
