Four sneaky acne triggers

If you’ve ever stood in the bathroom with your teen wondering, “We’re washing, we’re trying…so why is this still happening?” know you’re not alone. Acne is multi-faceted and stubborn. While hormones play a role, I often see everyday habits acting as hidden triggers.

Protein shakes. Many teens reach for whey-based protein after sports. What most families don’t realize is that whey can increase inflammation in acne-prone skin, sometimes leading to deeper, more persistent breakouts. The fix: Try swapping to a pea protein powder for a few weeks and watch for changes. The skin will tell the story.

Energy drinks. They’re convenient, but stimulants like caffeine can increase oil production. Additives and poor sleep only add fuel to the fire. The fix: Encourage steady hydration, balanced meals and consistent sleep to help calm excess oil and inflammation.

Pillowcases. They collect sweat, hair products and bacteria night after night. The fix: Wash them weekly — an easy reset that truly matters.

Phones. Pressed against the cheek, they transfer oil and germs right into common breakout zones. The fix: A quick daily wipe-down can make a noticeable difference.

When we gently uncover these hidden triggers, we give our teens simple, doable steps toward calmer, healthier skin.
