There has been a lot of press about the current health of
Americans. As we experience the impact of our sedentary
culture we have learned regular exercise needs to become an
important part of our daily activities. People are looking for fun
reasons to get off the couch and get moving. Some people have
the ability to get out and run Marathons, half marathons, 10k or 5k
all on their own. Some of us need more motivation! There
is a new fad sweeping across our county and the Tri-Cities is
excited to be part of it.

A Color Run is a 5k (3.1 miles) where the participants wear as
much white as possible. At each kilometer along the way there
are color stations where people throw powder paint on all the
participants as they go by. This will ensure everyone crosses
the finish line in full color! As a participant you can run
the distance and see what your time is or you can jog, walk, or
crawl to the finish line. This is fun to do alone and even
more fun with a group of people you love and enjoy spending time
with.

On June 22nd
Kingspoint Christian School is excited to be hosting a family
friendly5k "KOLOR RUN" which will be held at the Fingernail
Building in Howard Amon Park. It is important for children to
get out and participate in healthy activities over the summer and
this is a great opportunity for families to have some fun and be
active together.

Requirements for this event:

Be ready to have fun while participating in a healthy
activity

Enter to Win & Find Out!

The air is getting warmer, days are getting longer, the
kids are getting restless- there's no denying it, summer is just
around the corner! Whether your family embraces the
flexibility of a summer schedule or you cringe at the thought of
making arrangements to keep your kids occupied for 11 weeks,
deciding how they will spend their summer is often a stressful time
for families. While many parents of elementary aged children
aren't quite ready to send their young ones off to overnight camp
for week, summer camp programs have huge benefits for
kids.

Luckily, there are options for families to keep kids
closer to home while still reaping the benefits that summer camp
programs have to offer. Day camps are a time for kids to
expand their horizons and learn new skills that schools just aren't
able to provide. During the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Cities'
Spring Break Adventure Camp, children were given the opportunity to
explore their world through bird watching, fishing, and hikes in
our community. Through partnering with several organizations,
this week off from school was not a week off from learning, rather
kids were empowered to ask questions and search for answers outside
of the school setting. Campers in the program reported that,
"It was the best week ever!" and, "We had a fun time getting
to know each other and volunteers."

But is it worth it? Some parents feel that kids need
a break from structure during the summer, or that it's easier to
have a family member care for them rather than paying for
camp. While those are valid reasons to keep
your children home, the value of even one week in a summer
camp program that encourages an active lifestyle, outdoor play, new
friendships, and exposure to a variety of activities is
priceless. Many programs also offer partial scholarships to
families in need of assistance.

Summer day camp registration opens in the spring and some
programs fill quickly. <a style="font-size: 10px;"

I have been teaching summer art classes the last four years at
my home studio in West Richland. Previously I taught at the Allied
Arts Summer program. I feel the arts are very important in a
child's intellectual and educational development.

Arts are needed by our young people as a forum for safe
expression, communication, exploration and imagination. With the
arts students learn skills in problem solving, decision making
along with developing cognitive and creative skills and develop
their imaginations.

Homemade snow globes are always a fun project whether it is for
the holiday season or a rainy day project. Homemade snow globes
allow you to create a wintry scene out of your imagination. You can
access: www. marthastewart.com/273254/snow-globes or check out
other tutorials on Pinterest.com.

Here is a tutorial for making Snow Globes at home.

Materials

Martha Stewart Living, December/January1998/1999

Straight sided jar (preferably) baby food jars, olive jars,
etc.

Sand paper Glycerin (found drugstore or craft store)

Distilled water

Small figurines

Waterproof glue

Glitter (optional)

1. Sand the inside of the lid of the jar. Glue your figurine to
the jar. I have used E-6000 also Epoxy. Make sure that the glue is
dry.

2. Fill the jar with distilled water

3. Add glitter

4. Add 3-4 drops of glycerin.

5. Screw the lid on tight. Optional: Paint the lid before hand
with spray paint

6. Check to make sure you have enough water and that everything
fits. You can then glue the lid on.

Summer 2013 Classes

This year I will be teaching 3 clay arts class, 2 jewelry
classes and 1 Craftapaloosa class.

The clay arts class has been popular with girls as well as boys.
We will be working with ceramic clay, making magical creature,
small pots, figurines, sculpture, masks and decorating tiles.

In the jewelry class we will be making out own beads. We will
incorporate these with glass, wood and metal beads to make pins,
necklaces, earrings and bracelets. We will work with Shrinky-dink
and make altered domino necklaces.

In Craftapaloosa we work with paper mache, making masks and
sculptures, Mardi gras masks, painting tiles and making snow
globes.

ENTER TO WIN!

Comment with your favorite spring or summer craft
project to be entered to win a one week class for one child from
Lisa Day (some restrictions may apply.) Winner will be

What do your children want to be when they grow up? Chances are
the careers they ultimately choose will require some form of
post-secondary education. College is a big expense - one that gets
larger every year. In fact, tuition at our state's public
universities is more than double what it was ten years ago! So
what's the best way to plan for this expense?

Local families look to Washington's Guaranteed Education Tuition
(GET) Program as a secure and predictable way to save
for their children's future college costs. As the name
implies, GET accounts are guaranteed by
law to keep pace with rising tuition. The formula is
simple: put away what you can - as early as possible - and watch
your account grow.

GET seems like a great deal, but how does it
actually work for local families? Jackie Ferrado,
GET's Community Relations Manager, sat down with GET account owner
Tony Valdez of Richland to learn how GET helps them
plan for this major expense.

What has motivated you to save for your kids' college
tuition?
Tony: April and I are committed to
preparing for all aspects of our life so this was naturally one of
the areas that we needed to save for - the kids' college.

What about GET stood out to you?
Tony: The guarantee, definitely. We also
loved that the kids could select a college out of state or
even a private school, so choices were
important!

How did you decide on GET?
Tony: We did some research when we had our first
child and GET was the choice that made the most sense for us.
At the time, the price seemed unreal to us but we also knew it'd be
much more expensive when our son starts college. Now we have
a daughter and we've seen how much more expensive college got in
the past few years. So it was natural that we'd open an account for
her as well.

Have you any other thoughts to share with parents?
Tony: We are so glad we researched the
information, learned more about GET and other ways of saving, and
that we started when our kids were young.

Tony talked about how valuable it was that both he and April
supported each other in saving for college. GET also encourages
parents to show their children what they're doing to save. Kids who
are aware they have a college savings account in their name are six
times more likely to go to college. Save a little, GET a lot. The
dollars you set aside now are worth so much more in the future.

About GET
GET is Washington's 529 prepaid college tuition plan, celebrating
15 years of helping families save for their children's college
education. One of GET's key objectives is to reach out to
Washington families and reinforce the importance saving
early. GET proudly partners with local organizations,
including the Kennewick
School District Community Education Program, to
connect with Tri-Cities families. To learn more about GET or enroll
today, visit <a
