Mr. Roboto

Friday was a crazy robot filled day in honor of our little buddy's third birthday. Nathan and I had a blast making all-things robot - this was definitely our favorite party to put together so far. Since it's easy for kids this little to get overwhelmed, we tried to keep the party a little smaller this year, and it worked out well. Alex had his best buddies there, including our neighbors that he idolizes (4 brothers - 2 sets of twins!).

The day started out with some great gifts...the highlight being roller blades from my parents.
He also received a stuffed robot from Auntie Lynn and Uncle Butch that he immediately named "Ro-buddy". And also Harold the Helicopter
We brought Alex to school with cupcakes for his classmates, so his whole day became one long celebration. While he was gone, Nathan and I were busy setting up for the party. We made just about everything ourselves using these little robot digital files I bought to make the wall decals for Alex's room.

Here are the invitations:
The banner on the front door:

And the "ro-boxes" that served as favor boxes. Nathan's office had a lot of used boxes waiting to be recycled, and - given our track-record of incorporating cardboard into parties - he brought them home knowing he would figure out something cool to do with them. . . After a little thought and experimenting with our 'proto-bot', here is how they turned out.

Inside each one, we included a bag of "nuts and bolts" (trail-mix),

a CD with all of Alex's favorite songs (in case you are wondering what 3-year-olds are listening to these days):
And a "power bar" - a customized candy bar, thanks to my dad!

I also made place-mats with each kids' name on it. After designing them I just printed them out and laminated them. Easy peasy!

Do your best robot, Alex!
For activities, we gave the kids some marshmallows and toothpicks and they made little marshmallow robots.

I don't have a good picture of this, but we gave each kid a power-button sticker to put on their hands. This was their "on/off" switch. If someone pushed it, they had to say "powering down" and freeze until someone pushed it again and turned them back on. They got a kick out of that...

Here is the robot cake I made, following these directions:

After cake & ice cream, everyone went outside to see a special guest - a robot that came to deliver a couple presents just for Alex. The robot was Gary who decided that he wanted to participate in the robot madness and made this costume - it was AWESOME.

What a great time! Alex had a blast, and we still can't believe he is three already! Thank you to everyone who helped to make this such a special day for him.

Birthday party 1 - The Little Gym

My nephew Cole had his 2nd birthday party at The Little Gym. There were about 14 kids there, and TLG instructors took all the kids through a series of songs, games and activities. From a planning perspective, my sister-in-law loved it because she handed over the guest list to TLG and they took care of every detail, including sending out invitations. The kids had SUCH a fun time.

Here they are singing the "welcome" song.circle-time

TLG has a table they set up with balloons so the kids could sing Happy Birthday and eat cupcakes.

After cupcakes, they set up some mats so Cole could sit up like he was on stage to open presents. He got the biggest kick out of being up there in front of everyone!

I loved how well planned the party was....these folks have obviously done a lot of these, so it flowed perfectly from one activity to the next. And it's nice to have the cupcake consumption to be balanced with some good ol' fashioned exercise!

Birthday Party 2 - The Toy Factory

Mia's good little friend Abby celebrated her 5th birthday at the Toy Factory's Play Factory.

The Play Factory is such an awesome space to have a party. Not only is it an amazing place with tons of toys, books, and crafts for kids to play with, but there is an entire "party" room with tables for cake, food, and presents. The staff at the Toy Factory is great - very friendly and helpful. My kids love it there, and this party was one of the best! 02202010 02002202010 02102202010 029

Birthday parties galore!

happy_birthday_balloons-1304

I think we chose the right months for our birthday party issue of the magazine. In the last 6 weeks, we have been invitied to 6 birthday parties, so we've been able to experience a lot of different kinds of parties at different places. Be on the look out over the next week as I post pictures and details of some of the different parties, and what we liked about them.
