Additional Autism awareness month resources

equation

The recent issue of MOM Magazine features an interview with Erin Harrington, mother to a Autistic son. As Autism awareness month comes to a close, I wanted to highlight another local resource for kids with autism, the Social Communication Clinic.

The Social Communication Clinic teaches social skills in a fun and creative environment to people of all ages. SCC serves children and adolescents with High Functioning Autism, Asperger's and PDD-NOS. These cohesive groups allow the students to learn and practice the skills in a variety of situations.

The Social Communication Clinic is also holding summer camp for kids in grades K through 8.

There are more useful links to related topics found here. Be on the look-out for the Corvallis Clinic's upcoming story about neurological disorders.

MOM Makeover 2011

It was another exciting makeover! The votes have been tallied and our 2011 winner is...

Amy MacRostie

amy macrostie

Catherine Dorn had these thoughts on nominating Amy:

Amy MacRostie is such a great mom, and she's been going through the worst year of her life. Amy's six year old son Mason was diagnosed with cancer four days before his seventh birthday, and since that terrible morning in December, Amy's life has been about nothing but Mason's cancer, his treatment, doctor visits, back and forth to Doernbecher, chemo, medicine, side effects....she even put off surgury to repair a torn ligament in her hand at least twice because surgery would have interfered with her ability to care for Mason. Amy deserves some rest and rejuvination, even if it's just for one day. Amy loves her son, she loves her husband, and she deserves to love herself for just one day, too.

Congratulations, Amy! Stay tuned for updates on Amy's makeover, and look for her to appear on the cover of the June/July issue.

Healthy MOM correction

MOM Magazine indavertently omitted the source from Dr. Dickson's Apr/May Healthy MOM article "What to do when a stomach virus strikes." The source, Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (Copyright © 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics), has been included in the revised article found here.

Time for a Restyle

Feeling the need for a color pick-me-up this week, I dropped into Restyle, an upscale resale clothing store in North Albany. I have been pulled inside the store more than once by the outfits in their windows, visible from the drive-thru at Starbucks.

I found a great spring sundress...as well as a warm and comfy sweater. Guess I was still in need of some comfort food to get me through this cold and wet weather. But I'll keep an eye out for the sun and maybe wear my dress someday.

I did learn about their big Anniversary party this weekend. Stop by for a sip of champagne, sweet bites and that splash of spring you're craving. Congratulations Restyle!
