Back to School Time

Has anyone ventured out and purchased school supplies yet?  I actually purchased them early, before the first day of school.  I always expect to spend a lot of money.  However, this year, I feel that my kids looked for more deals than last.  My son found four spiral binders for $1.  Then he proudly told me that if he had purchased the spiral binders that were not packaged together, it would have cost twice as much.  Not to be outdone, the daughter also purchased the bundled spiral binders.  If it was just her, I suspect that she wouldn't have cared.  She has a different perspective about money than our son.

Many families have kids that use money differently.  The challenge that I have is to teach them the same thing, but through differently ways.

Good luck shopping and happy teaching

I am a teacher and always check Staples weekly ad. From Sunday to Wednesday during the month of August, they have 1 cent deals that are great for home and school.

I can't believe its time to go back to school. $1 for 4 spiral binders is a really good price. Congrats on finding such a great deal. Do you have any other ideas for saving money this time of year?

I am done with school shopping, as of today. My daughter made sure we did it early this year. I found some great deals too, and even got some fun office stuff for myself. If you wait until the last minute (speaking from experience) there is very little remaining, and it's three-times the price. I really need to have my kids more involved in the actual budget process. Thank you for the reminder!

We just got done with school shopping at our house. We scaled back this year, but by shopping throughout the summer and using sale flyers and coupons, we did pretty well! Thanks for all your tips!

A good friend of mine has been home recovering from major surgery. She was unable to take her daughter shopping for school clothers. She had her older son drive her to the mall and escore her around. It worked out pretty well. They knew the budget and although he was a bit bored going store to store, he was able to provided his lil' sis good tips on both style and money. What a good big brother! Got me thinking that there must be many other other ways sibings and peers might tag-team together to learn and apply money management skills.

Being the avid-recycler that I am, I always look at the 2nd hand stores for back packs and 3 ring binders. Sometimes Goodwill even gets a batch of new spiral notebooks which are always handy.
I also find that everything is discounted by October 1st so if I do have to buy new, I buy just a few, then stock up when they go on sale.
